Character Information
Name: Neku Sakuraba
Canon: The World Ends With You
Canon Point: Post-duel, pre-revival.
Age: 15
History: Wiki page!
Personality: Neku is sharp, dry, sarcastic, and entirely self-reliant. He couldn't care less what those around him think, what they want out of life, or what's important to them. As long as he's left alone to his music and his thoughts, he's content to let the world pass by without a care about anyone else.
...Or at least, that's what he wanted everyone to think a month ago. He's not so sure about that anymore.
However, the first part is true: Neku is remarkably intelligent, both in book smarts and logic, and on top of that his intuition is generally spot-on. Quite often his gut feeling about a situation is absolutely true, and this gives him the potential to be good with people - saying the right thing when they're feeling down, picking up on implications, etc. Of course, he's still learning what to do with this talent, and often finds himself awkwardly trying to comfort or relate to someone when he doesn't quite know how.
He has a tendency to be impatient with people, though his frustration is rarely meant personally (with the exception of people like Joshua or Sho), and being led on or being teased for not knowing something is often the quickest way to piss him off. If someone genuinely (or at least convincingly) tries to connect with him in a friendly way, he makes an active effort to respond in kind, even if it doesn't always come out smoothly... or at all. Neku is an abuser of ellipses, and often thinks his thoughts more than speaks them, so while he'll be very talkative while explaining something, the moment the conversation turns to chit-chat one will find themselves being met with silence and “uhhuh"s often unless he has something especially constructive to say.
At the core of his personality – as embarrassed as he’d be to admit it – Neku is a very sensitive person, and tends to feel things very deeply once he’s allowed himself to care. When Rhyme is erased during the first week, Neku says this right up front: caring about people just gets you hurt. It’s heavily implied that the beginning of his closed-off streak was caused by a death of a friend that he ended up blaming himself for, which was a trauma he was only able to start recovering from by, ironically, dying himself. Joshua’s revealed betrayal at the end of canon was enough to move him to tears on the spot, but the bond he’d chosen to establish with the Composer a week prior left him still unable to shoot him. Neku is indeed intelligent, blunt, and sometimes defensive, but they’re necessary traits to have in order to balance out his new lease on life where he cares about anyone other than himself and may end up suffering for it later, even if it’s worth it. At least he definitely thinks it’s worth it, now.
So, to quote canon, Neku is trying his best to expand his world and understand people, and judging from the progress he made in just a month during the game, it's clear that he is adaptable and willing to change, which will probably remain his greatest strength and motivation for the rest of his life.
Abilities: Neku is a 100% totally normal, albeit dead, kid. While he’s got a lot of Imagination (and therefore latent psychic power) and an intuition that borders on uncanny, mortal human is mortal human. He isn’t exactly athletic, either, so uh. M-mind over matter? The fact that he was able to faceroll through three weeks of Shibuya’s Game and then take down the Big-Not-So-Bad Conductor at the end proves him to be a pretty good tactician in a fight and also a good problem solver when it comes to handling tasks like in Game Missions. Neku runs on brainpower.
Strengths: Earnest, Insightful, Intelligent, Dedicated, Adaptable
Weaknesses: Stubborn, Sarcastic, Bitter, Reserved, Vindictive
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: Frankly, he’ll be happier in the role. Amnesia is a sore spot for him, sure, but it’s not like he’s going to remember that until he’s adjusted enough to the rest of the situation. Grumbling about it won’t matter much at that point! He would find the task of looking after shinki of his own incredibly daunting and probably either frustrating or anxiety-inducing, besides, because when you get right down to it he’s a kid that wants to do right by people and would be afraid of the responsibility.
Granted, Neku doesn’t exactly like being at the beck and call of someone else, either, though he’ll put up with it better post-Game than at the beginning of canon. The pivotal fact of the situation – especially with what I have worked out with the Joshua player as explained below – is that he has some leverage. Not only will Joshua be basically defenseless without him, but the abilities Neku’s assistance will allow him to access are (supposed to be) already his, and it’s unlikely that even Joshua would pass up a smoother status quo in that department for the sake of his pride if Neku has to lay down the law on something.
And I mean, really, if you ignore the recent history of behavior problems, you could do much worse than Neku when it comes to making someone effectively a deity’s conscience.
Cause Of Death: Street art is all fun and games until your local shitbag death god randomly decides to put a bullet in your brain. (Now in both classic and HD single-screen flavors!) Neku saw it coming about as much as it looked like he did, having been innocently admiring a mural by his favorite artist until Josh showed up to ruin the kid’s life for the sake of his own machinations. Thanks for that, Mr. Composer.
Vessel: A black and violet touch-screen smart phone.
Name Location: 音, "sound", name Onki, on his left shoulder blade.
Power: In the interest of nerfing Joshua’s godmod combat abilities and also making it so he has to rely on a shinki in some fashion, his player and I have decided to make the use of his phone to perform psychs in canon (previously a cover for his godly status) mandatory. Only he won’t have his phone! And thus Neku’s nickname "Phones" becomes "iPhones".
Therefore, Neku functions as a tactical assistant and psychic amplifier, allowing Josh to direct his telekinesis on a large enough scale to actually be destructive, and is also taking on Joshua’s precognitive abilities to be able to predict the movements of an enemy (to an extent, of course), as Josh is in turn losing all of his precog when operating alone.
The limitations to his functions as a networking device are restricted to far-shore-only networking (ie the BBS), and when he speaks while in his vessel form his voice comes from the receiver as if he were on the other end of a speakerphone call.
Hopefully he’s also equipped with a shatter-resistant screen. Would he drown or malfunction if dropped in a toilet? (If there ever was need for one in Takamagahara, perhaps we’d find out sooner than later.) At least Josh will have access to the most accurate voice-to-text feature known to man or god— when Neku doesn’t decide to censor him.
