▷ First Impressions▶ VISUAL: For image reference, please see his canon art.
Neku is a scrawny kid, skinny as a rail and standing at about 5'5". He tends to dress comfortably, opting to go for looks that he finds cool rather than paying much attention to fashion trends (even if he's more aware of them these days). His hair is bright orange and meticulously styled into spikes so long as he has time and hair product to do so - and since the setting of the game is Shibuya, land of crazy fashion and self-expression, the headcanon interpretation here is that his hair color is a dye job and black is his natural color. His eyes are a deep, dark blue. While he is always wearing his headphones in canon (before symbolically removing them at the end), in The Far Shore he won't have them, and without his memories won't even really need them as a security blanket. Assume bare-eared unless mentioned otherwise! As a shinki, the kanji for his name is 音 (the same "ne" in his name, vessel name Onki) and is located on his left shoulder blade.
His form as a vessel is a smartphone. Much like an iPhone. I guess with his canon nickname he's now going to be known as "iPhones"?
▶ AURAL: Jesse David Corti provides Neku's English voice, and Koki Uchiyama provides his Japanese voice. As both actors show, Neku's way of speaking is somewhat odd in that his tonal quality is generally exceptionally soft, but his diction is expressive, up front, and emotive. He is not always quick to say what he thinks, but he always means what he says. He's not afraid to raise his voice when riled, either, but tends to stutter and false-start when shocked or panicked. Though he may seem soft-spoken and quiet upon first meeting - or sharp and curt, depending on the situation - once he relaxes and is comfortable around someone they'll come to realize that he's got quite the personality and expresses it in kind.
▶ OLFACTORY: No particular headcanon here. He tries to be tidy despite being a teenage boy that's still in the all-elbows-and-knees part of puberty, at least?
[Note: please excuse the player's congenital anosmia. I'm driving pretty much blind in this category.]
▶ DEMEANOUR: Much like his manner of speaking, Neku is paradoxical in much of his body language. He hunches his shoulders much of the time, which combined with his favorite shirt's high collar gives the impression of him hiding or withdrawing, and generally keeps his arms tucked relatively close to his body unless gesturing for effect. Despite this tendency to look very conscious of keeping his personal space, though, he stands up straight and keeps steady eye contact with whomever he's speaking to unless he finds himself lost in thought, which overall accurately gives him away as a highly reflective individual that isn't socially anxious so much as acutely aware of the divide between his thoughts and the outside world.
This may be one of his issues.
He may be working on it. |
